SOUTH AFRICA; BABY SAVERS DECLARED ILLEGAL AND IMMEDIATE CLOSURE ORDERED, MATTER HEADING TO COURT; ALLEGED NEWS
SOUTH AFRICA: THE GAUTENG DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT HAS DECIDED TO SHUT DOWN ALL BABY SAVERS USED BY CARE CENTERS: ALLEGED NEWS. [1] The Gauteng social development department believes that baby savers facilities encourage child abandonment and deny children their rights to identity and family; Alleged News. [2] Members of Baby Savers South Africa, a national coalition of organisations that provide temporary protection for abandoned infants, are taking legal action after the Gauteng department of social development issued a directive to shut down such centres: Alleged News. [2]
Baby Savers or baby drop-off boxes
Baby Savers, or baby drop-off boxes, are secure devices where mothers who are not able to take care of their babies can safely and anonymously leave them; Alleged News. [2] The devices trigger an alarm in the centre where they are installed, to alert caregivers that a baby has been left in one; Alleged News. [2]
Baby Savers declared illegal
The Gauteng social development department said in a letter sent to organisations in 2023, "The baby box takes away any form of responsibility of the biological mother to care for the child and further disregards the future role and responsibility of the biological father," Alleged News. [2] Baby savers have been declared illegal and their immediate closure ordered; Alleged News. [2]
Closures of Baby Saver organisations
Since that time, seven out of 12 baby-saver organisations in Gauteng have closed operations, concerned re legal repercussions: others are questioning the order for closure; Alleged News. Legal proceedings initiated
Baby Savers South Africa has initiated legal proceedings against the department and contends in its court papers that certain provisions of the Children's Act - which the Gauteng department relied on in issuing the directive - are unconstitutional; Alleged News. [2] "Our primary fear, and whole reason for fighting for Baby Savers, is the loss of an innocent little life. The right to life surpasses all other rights - and a baby saver is a safe alternative to unsafe baby abandonment. Do babies' lives not matter?" Co-founder Nadene Grabham asked, Alleged News. [2] Ms Grabham is co-founder of Baby Savers South Africa, and operational director at Door of Hope Children's Mission; Alleged News. [2]

SOUTH AFRICA; CONTRACEPTIVES AND IMPLANON FOR SCHOOLCHILDREN DISCUSSION; ALLEGED NEWS
SOUTH AFRICA; GAUTENG DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH REVEALED ITS PLANS TO GIVE SCHOOLGIRLS CONTRACEPTIVES; ALLEGED NEWS. [1] Gauteng Health and Wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko announced the plan during a visit to Tshwane Secondary School during her Back to School 2025 programme; Alleged News. [1] The MEC announced plans to provide schoolgirls with contraceptives, reportedly with only the permission of their parents; Alleged News. [1]
Concern regarding Implanon
The plans were not well received by human rights organisations, including Section27, which wrote an open letter cautioning against the department's "misguided and unlawful" approach to the issue; Alleged News. [1]
"What is particularly concerning and would amount to an egregious violation of constitutional rights, reminiscent of coerced and forced sterilisation, is your decision to make the contraceptive, Implanon, an implant, compulsory for pupils based only on parental consent," said Section27; Alleged News. [1]
"Any attempt to forcefully administer contraceptives to young women and girls undermines their constitutional rights to bodily integrity and autonomy and con-currently constitutes gender-based violence and common-law assault," Section27 wrote: Alleged News. [1]
The open letter by Section27 added, "The law is clear; the department cannot make any form of contraception compulsory to pupils, even with parental consent," Alleged News. [1]
Department
The Department said the MEC was misunderstood, saying the concern was an "incorrect impression" that it intends to compel schoolgirls to receive contraceptives without their consent; Alleged News. [1]
"These services include subdermal implants, a long-acting contraceptive, alongside other methods such as condom use and abstinence, said spokesperson Motalatale Modiba; Alleged News. [1]
Implanon insertions
Gauteng Health and Wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko announced a significant decrease in teenage mothers following a Teenage Pregnancy Seminar and various interventions: Alleged News. Some women have reported unbearable side effects
The abstract from the study by Mgobhozi et al., regarding women's experiences on the use of Implanon as a contraceptive method in a selected primary healthcare facility in KwaZulu-Natal, states the following: "The South African department of health recently introduced subdermal Implanon contraceptive implant with the aim to reduce teenage pregnancy and maternal mortality. First used in all public healthcare facilities across the country since early 2014, this method of contraception has been described as highly effective. However, some women have reported unbearable side effects, forcing them to remove the contraceptive implant early before its expiry date." [4]

2025 Implanon class action lawsuit
Implanon lawsuits focus on serious complications caused by this contraceptive implant, primarily device migration that makes removal impossible and increases risks of life-theatening conditions: Alleged News. [6]
The litigation alleges that Merck and its subsidiary Organon failed to adequately warn patients and physicians about the potential for the device to migrate throughout the body, becoming irretrievable; Alleged News. [6]
40% increase in blood clots risk
Additionally, studies have shown that non-oral hormonal contraceptives like Implanon increase the risk of blood clots, including pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis, by as much as 40%; Alleged News. [6]
Women whose Implanon devices became irretrievable
In March 2025, a federal judge has reportedly certified a class action lawsuit against Merck & Co. for women whose Implanon devices migrated and became irretrievable, allowing thousands of affected women to join the litigation without filing individual cases; Alleged News. [6]
600 Implanon migration cases
In January 2025, the MDL panel consolidated over 600 Implanon migration cases for pretrial proceedings in New Jersey federal court; Alleged News. [6]
Higher migration risk
In November 2024, new medical research published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology confirmed that the migration risk of Implanon is significantly higher than previously reported, strengthening plaintiffs' claims that Merck concealed the true scope of the problem; Alleged News. [6]
2021 study in British Medical Journal
A 2012 study published in the British Medical Journal found that subcutaneous contraceptives like Implanon have a 40% greater risk of blood clots compared to non-hormonal contraception; Alleged News. [6]
Pregnancies after receiving Implanon implants
In the UK, officials reported that nearly 600 women became pregnant after receiving Implanon implants, raising concerns about effectiveness; Alleged News. [6]
Hundreds of reports of device migration
The FDA has received hundreds of reports of device migration, with some implants found in blood vessels and even the lungs; Alleged News. [6]
Rebrand as Nexplanon
According to the National Center for Health Research, migration issues were serious enough that Merck made major changes to the product, rebranding it as Nexplanon with added barium for better visualization; Alleged News [6]
According to the Implanon lawsuit website, Severe medical complications of Implanon are:
- Device Migration: the implant can move from its insertion site, becoming irretrievable and potentially travelling to blood vessels, lungs, or other body parts, requiring complex surgical procedures for removal
- Blood Clots: increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism, which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly
- Cardiovascular Events: Heart attack or stroke resulting from blood clots that travel to the heart or brain
- Vascular and Organ Damage: Damage to blood vessels and surrounding tissues, potentially leading to permanent injury
- Failed Contraception: Unexpected pregnancy, including the risk of dangerous ectopic pregnancies [6]

Euthanasia is considered by Professor Theo Boer - once part of euthanasia bureaucracy - to be the proverbial slippery slope
Professor Theo Boer - a prominent Professor of Ethics who once was part of the Netherlands' euthanasia bureaucracy voiced his qualms about the interpretation and use of the Dutch euthanasia law in a lengthy interview published by Trouw, Alleged News. [5]
Professor Boer was worried that trends in the Netherlands were trivializing euthanasia to an extent that many who fought for legalization of 'mercy killing' in the 1990's privately expressed their opinion that it had gone too far. And it will be hard to turn back the clock, he acknowledged; Alleged News. [5]
Professor Boer served as ethicist regarding euthanasia
Professor Theo Boer does not oppose euthanasia; he served as an ethicist for nine years on one of the five regional control commissions that monitor all cases of declared euthanasia in the Netherlands; Alleged News. [5] He stepped down in September 2013; Alleged News. [5]
Statistics show that twelve years after the Dutch euthanasia law came into force, euthanasia statistics moved from 1,800 declared cases per year to 4,800 in 2013, reaching a total of more than 25,000 medical euthanisations; Alleged News. [5] In 2013, 46 psychiatric patients and 97 patients suffering from dementia were euthanised; Alleged News. [5]
Warning from former euthanasia supporter Professor Boer
Legalising assisted suicide is a slippery slope towards widespread killing of the sick, MP's and peers in the UK were told in 2014, Alleged News. [6] A former euthanasia supporter, Professor Theo Boer, warned of a surge in deaths if Parliament allowed doctors to give deadly drugs to their patients; Alleged News. [6] 'Don't do it, Britain', said Theo Boer a veteran European watchdog in assisted suicide cases. 'Once the genie is out of the bottle, it is not likely ever to go back in again,' Alleged News. [6]
Professor Boer admitted he was 'wrong - terribly wrong, in fact' to have believed regulated euthanasia would work; Alleged News. [6] 'I used to be a supporter of the Dutch law. But now, with 12 years of experience, I take a very different view,' Alleged News. [6]
Doctors in the Netherlands issued call to hit the brakes
In 2017, an advertisement taken out in a major newspaper (NRC) in the Netherlands by 220 Dutch doctors [7] began, "[Assisted suicide] for someone who cannot confirm he wants to die? No, we will not do that. Our moral reluctance to end the life of a defenceless man is too great," Alleged News. [8]
The doctors, many of whom served as assisted-suicide providers, were objecting to the unchecked growth of euthanasia in their country, where people who had reduced mental capacity due to dementia were being euthanised; Alleged News. [8]
In 2017, the law allowed doctors to euthanise without verbal consent if a written declaration of will has been provided in advance; Alleged News. [8] In addition, a doctor also has to first determine that the patient is undergoing unbearable suffering, Alleged News. [8] However, with reduced mental capacity, patients are often unable to confirm that their former request to be euthanised - executed perhaps years earlier - is still valid; Alleged News. [8]
Elderly woman euthanised against her will
Alarm bells began to sound for these doctors some years ago when an elderly woman was euthanised against her will; Alleged News. [8]
The 80-year-old, who suffered from dementia, allegedly had earlier requested to be euthanised when "the time was right", but in her last days expressed her desire to continue living: Alleged News. [8]
Despite the lady having changed her mind about ending her life, her doctor put a sedative in her coffee; Alleged News, [8] When that was not enough, the doctor enlisted the help of family members to hold down the struggling, objecting patient so that she could administer the lethal injection: Alleged News. [8]
Human right to live
"Doesn't someone have a right to change their mind?" asked Alex Schadenberg, executive director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition; Alleged News. [8]
The directive of the Head of the Church
Jesus Christ is acknowledged as the Supreme High Priest in Hebrews 4:14-15. Jesus is the eternal Head of the Church (Colossians 1:18). All priests of God bow our heads before commandment from Jesus, our eternal High Priest.
Jesus Christ, the Son of God, proclaimed, "I did not come to abolish the Law of Moses or the writings of the prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God's Law will disappear until everything is accomplished." (Matthew 5:17-18)
Thus Jesus affirmed that the Law of Moses inclusive of the sixth commandment, "Thou shalt not kill," (Ex 20:13) is to be obeyed.
Complex end-of-life care
Issues surrounding end-of-life care may prove complex. Bio-ethical complexities within modern clinical care scenarios may arise. Discernment, informed understanding, clinical skill and chaplaincy care are proven pillars of support during end-of-life care. These pillars often assist to ensure excellent care and sensitive, holistic support at end-of-life to both patient and their loved ones.
The guiding moral compass in end-of-life care is the guiding light from God, that humankind is not at liberty to make the decision to take the life of another.
