WOMEN: HYSTERECTOMY AND CERVICAL SCREENING - GOOD HEALTH

Many women struggle onwards in silence with suffering and fear. The issue surrounds the reality of womanhood, when signs and symptoms show that the blessing of the reproductive system is ailing. 

This is not an issue to feel shy about, it is a normal and natural part of human daily life. A woman who is struggling should immediately contact her Clinic, Doctor or GP for assistance with her reproductive system difficulties. 

As a mother or sister, it is important for you to enlighten your daughters/sisters with the basic information about the reproductive system. 
  It is not a kindness to withhold essential information about the woman's reproductive system through feelings such as shyness. 

Many women do not know the basic facts about their body, and this can lead to untold suffering.    Charity work shows many such scenes of suffering, both physical and mental; 
A young girl screaming in fear and agony, trying to hold back her contractions as her baby was being born, as she had been told by a local person that what was within her were snakes; once born they would turn on her and devour her. 

  Another young girl being slapped so hard that her head snapped back on her neck when she asked where babies came from. 
  Young girls beginning Nature's initiation of them as a young woman, terrified that they were dying as they had never been told this would happen. 

A woman haemmorhaging for years because she was too shy due to her upbringing to speak about her agonizing issue. These are just some of the faces of suffering in Charity work that face the Charity worker.

SIMPLE QUESTIONS - SIMPLE ANSWERS
So; you are in Charity work and are faced with this situation. You will need to know the basic facts in order for you to be able to assist the person in need with grace and dignity.

1. What is the womb (uterus)?
The uterus or womb is a pear shaped organ that is found in the female pelvis at the top of the vagina.  It varies in size and shape depending on the hormonal and childbearing status of the woman.    When a woman is pregnant, the baby grows inside the uterus (womb) until the time comes for the baby to be born.

2. What is Cervical Screening ?
Cervical screening is a check up to see if there are any changes in the cervix cells (cells at the neck of the womb) which could cause illness. 

3. What is a cervical smear test?
A cervical smear test is a sample of cells taken from the neck of the womb (cervix). 
 It is a quick and simple procedure and is nothing to feel shy or worried about. 
 It is a great check up to prevent future ill health for women.

4. How often should I have a cervical smear?
The Pap test (cervical smear test) is recommended for all women from the age of 21.
 Be guided by your Doctor/Gynaecologist as to how often you personally need the Pap smear (cervical smear test).

5. What is a hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is an operation to remove the uterus (womb).
 There are several different types of hysterectomy.

6. Why do women have a hysterectomy?
A number of conditions women suffer from may be corrected by the removal of the uterus or womb.
Hysterectomy may be necessary for the following reasons;
- Heavy vaginal bleeding
- Bleeding that is irregular or very painful
- Fibroids which cause pain, bleeding or are very large. A fibroid is a non-cancerous growth of fibrous tissue and muscle
- Prolapse of the uterus, where the womb (uterus) loosens and falls into the vagina
- Endometriosis. This is a condition caused by tissues that normally form inside the uterus forming outside the uterus in the abdominal cavity
- Cancer of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tube/s or cervix
- Pelvic inflammatory disease and or adhesions which cause pain. Adhesions are fibrous bands that form between tissues and organs.

7. What is a total hysterectomy?
A total hysterectomy removes the whole uterus, as well as the cervix. When the cervix has been removed, the top of the vagina is then called a vault. 

8. What is a subtotal hysterectomy?
A subtotal hysterectomy removes only the womb (uterus). This leaves the cervix in place. If you have a subtotal hysterectomy operation, you will need to continue to have smear tests.

9. Do women who have had hysterectomies need cervical smears? 
Your Doctor/Gynaecologist will guide you on this. A woman who has had a total hysterectomy does not usually need to continue to be screened.
A woman will usually need to continue to have smear tests
- after a subtotal hysterectomy
- if she had abnormal smears before surgery
- if the laboratory found cervical abnormalities (problems with the cervix needing extra care) at the time of surgery
- or if the hysterectomy was for treatment of cancer or precancerous (likely to develop into cancer if not properly treated) conditions

10. What is a vault smear?
When a woman has had removal of the womb (uterus) and cervix (neck of the womb), the cervical smear tests will be taken from the top of the vagina and are called vault smears.

11. I don't know what type of hysterectomy I had, and I'm worried about it?
Women who do not know what type of hysterectomy they had, or the reason for having it, should ask their Doctor to check their records. 
 If your Doctor does not have this information and on examination finds evidence that you had a total hysterectomy, then it is usually recommended to have two vault smear tests a year apart. 
  Then if both are normal, screening can usually stop. Again, be guided by your Doctor/ Gynaecologist with your personal need for screenings.

12. I am in a squatter camp and have no money. What do I do?
Try to contact someone who can help you. People such as those in your local Clinic, a goodhearted neighbour nurse, a dedicated GP who is known to help the poor may be able to help. 
  Also, your local Pastor, Priest, or Spiritual Leaders/group of nuns may be able to help. They are dedicated by their call to helping those in need, and may be able to assist you to afford the care you need.

13. I am in a war torn area, and am desperate. What do I do?
If possible, try to get to a Doctors Without Borders facility. These dedicated Doctors assist those in great need.

14. I am working with poor women in outlying villages, desperately poor situations. What do I do?
Try to contact a reputable group to see if they can assist you with starting a Gyaecological Clinic in your village/outlying area. 
  Failing that, contact a reputable charitable group to ask for assistance with transport/ bed and board costs/ doctor and treatment costs/ for the ill women in the nearest large city that offers a Gynaecology Clinic.

Gynaecologists - Irreplaceable Vocation
It is an irreplaceable vocation to be a Gynaecologist. 
 Over the years as I have worked in rural areas, far outlying villages, squatter camps and areas where conflict has left its ravages, I have been asked again and again by women with hopeless eyes and unimaginable suffering to send a Gynaecologist to help them. 

  Perhaps Divine Providence has led you to read these words; if you are a Gynaecologist 

or part of a Gynaecology Specialist Team, 

why not consider offering your services 

pro deo in some area for a while?

 The suffering of many women - 

in silence and at times cultural shame - 

is beyond bearing.

Breaking News Ireland; The Human Face of Homelessness

A WOMAN IN ADVANCED STAGE OF PREGNANCY, her face twisted in humiliation, tears running down her face and her right hand protectively over her unborn infant within stood begging for food money. She is sleeping on the streets. There are many pregnant women sleeping on the streets in Ireland now; they, along with others, are the face of the New Poor. These are educated people who were able to sustain their families, homes and lives through hard work, worship, community and family life. A combination of factors have led to their homeless status. Among them are higher taxation, higher living costs, lowered salaries for higher hours, lack of jobs, lack of ability to access assistance as they do not qualify, rapidly increasing rents. 

Inundation of homeless 
Lumiere Charity has been working among the homeless in Ireland since 2004. The inundation of homeless on the streets now have become a haemmorhage of humanity. Last week alone saw gaunt mothers and fathers silently walking with infants, children; pregnant women near their time; young men unable to get jobs or access assistance beginning to starve; families with beloved family pets sleeping in the street. 

Face of human tragedy
The face of human tragedy has become desperate in Dublin. A few weeks ago; it was raining and cold. A young man, inadequately clad, was hunting for piles of cardboard and settled himself on the ground, pulling the cardboard over himself as protection in the cold night. What made his plight particularly pitiful was both the dignity with which he carried himself, and the weeds which sprouted around his makeshift bed in the soggy rain. The piles of cardboard tidily flattened and put outside Dublin shops have become a prized commodity among the homeless, who share them out at night as their only protection against the elements. There is a rule among the homeless; the pregnant, the youngest and the oldest get the first and most pieces of cardboard. They also get the places on the street least in the way of the wind and rain. Homeless people daily club together, and pool money they have either earned through small jobs, or begged; they then buy a hostel and breakfast for the night for the most vulnerable street dwellers. Failing the funds for that, they buy food and drink for the most vulnerable; often going without themselves . . . 

Verge of pneumonia
A tall young gentleman stood next to a shop, laboriously counting copper coins. To see a young man so humbly trying to make the cost of a cup of tea was heartrending. In the last two weeks alone, eight people on the verge of pneumonia. They do not have the cost to access public health service. One young gentleman is slowly starving. The stories of heroism are never ending. For those starving on the street, whenever they get some funds, instead of keeping the extra for their next few days bed and board, they help others by paying for them to access a hostel, breakfast and shower. It would break your heart.

Grim struggle
The homeless have entered a grim struggle to maintain their human dignity and cleanliness. A shower at the hostel with wash and dry of clothes are often chosen above food. So you see someone spotless and clean, slowly wasting away. There is a determination not to resort to crime, or to sell the only possession they have left; themselves. 

Tidal wage of humanity
Lumiere is working among the homeless. However, the scale of people becoming homeless daily has become alarming, and the age and vulnerability of many of the homeless (pregnant women near their time, young adults) has become the norm. Lumiere has heard it said that those on the streets are there because of drugs and addictions. It is true that some homeless are struggling with these issues; many of whom are trying to break the cycle of emotional heartbreak and entrapment in which they find themselves. It is also true that the face of the new poor flooding onto the streets are people who until very recently were able to fund their families and their lives, and are no longer able to do so. The reality is that the tidal wave of humanity pouring onto the streets in Ireland face an uncertain future. Without jobs, without protective shelter, without healthcare, the number of people dying will surely rise. Winter is due to come within a few months; there is deep concern among those ministering to the homeless as to what will happen then. Without jobs, without rents which hardworking and family value based families can afford, without recourse to crime or solicitation, there can be only one outcome. No income means a death sentence.

Tuhin Bagi Volunteer
Lumiere Charity has been privileged to have Tuhin Bagi as a volunteer for a number of years now. Tuhin carries out dedicated work for orphans and the underprivileged. This young gentleman from Nasik, India, has participated in programmes that have brought clothing, financial aid, shelter, education, health care and dental care to many in need.

Lumiere English Academy Pilot Programme
A number of years ago Tuhin and his mother, Dr Roma Bagi graciously agreed that Tuhin take part in Lumiere English Academy's pilot programme for the teaching of English to students as a second language.
The vision behind the programme was to make English education accessible to students in distant areas via the Internet/telephone. Tuhin successfully completed the Course last year.
The Course [designed by Catherine Nicolette Whittle Dip Tesol, EDI Level 5 Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (London, United Kingdom)] comprises, among others, the following elements;

University of California Berkeley
Lumiere was delighted to be apprised that Tuhin has recently received accreditation from the University of California, Berkeley, receiving the aggregate of 95% in independent examination. This certainly attests to the success of the new LEA (Lumiere English Academy) format.

Villages, Outlying Areas, Refugee and Squatter Camps
The Lumiere English Academy format was drawn up with the use of villages, outlying areas, refugee/ squatter camps and poor areas in mind. The programme containing the modules of the Lumiere Education Academy format followed so successfully by Tuhin will be made available in a series of blog posts. Perhaps you are in an outlying area? Allergy Alert;
Before starting the recipe, check first that you have no allergies to any of the ingredients.
If you are allergic to any of the ingredients, then don't use this recipe.



What you will need;

1 and a half cup noodles cooked (use gluten free noodles if you are coeliac or wheat intolerant)
4 tablespoons mayonnaise
Half green pepper chopped up
1 tin tuna drained

How to make
1. Mix the mayonnaise, tuna and green pepper into a sauce (add more mayonnaise if you wish)
2. Stir the sauce into the noodles and serve
Quick and easy!

Heartfelt Appeal for Desperate Need for People Leaving the Abortion Industry

"And Then There Were None has been contacted by 10 workers in the past week who are leaving their jobs in the abortion industry.
Some are medical assistants, some are billing experts, some are
clinic directors and some are nurses.  We are currently assessing their financial situation and if all 10 of these workers need financial assistance during their transition out of the industry, ATTWN will need approximately $25,000.00 to make that happen.

I very rarely make a plea for funds.  We are a small group, with
no paid staff.  All of our fundraising goes directly to former
abortion clinic workers and the very minimal overhead costs of the organization.

We know that this sudden interest from abortion clinic workers is directly related to the recent 40 Days for Life campaign that just ended.  We pray for them to leave.  Now we need your help to be able to adequately provide for these women who are desperate to escape from this evil industry.

Breaking News Ireland; We are Not Going Away

BREAKING NEWS DUBLIN IRELAND;
TODAY UP TO 15 000 PEOPLE STREAMED IN FROM ALL OVER IRELAND TO PROTEST THE NEW ABORTION LAW. VOX POPULI CHEERED AS A SPEAKER SAID, 
"WE ARE NOT GOING AWAY."
Everywhere the eye looked, Pro-Life message posters and dedicated Irish citizens stood patiently undeterred by the cool and sometimes softly raining weather. They had all waited for this day as they continue to campaign to have the abortion law repealed. 
Vox Populi carried posters, among them pictures of mother and baby with the words 'Protect them'.
Others gave out leaflets with the posters marking the words "We will not rest until this abortion law is overturned."
The respect for the Sanctity of Life of the Unborn Child in Ireland is paramount.
Innocence continues to be protected; the right to life of the Unborn Child is sacred.

Julie Holcombe
Julie Holcombe sent a video message to the people gathered at the National Vigil for Life in Ireland, encouraging all not to give up hope until the abortion law is overturned. She recalled the tragic experience of her own termination of pregnancy, as 'horrible'. Julie further encouraged the crowds to keep on in the fight for truth, justice and keeping life.

From Kitchen to Kitchen
Wendy Grace affirmed that the people of Ireland will not rest until the abortion law is overturned. Great cheers erupted from the crowd. Caroline Simons from Prolife Campaign spoke with determination and grace, about the people in Ireland. From kitchen to kitchen, the people of Ireland are gathering in their determination to have this law repealed. 

Tradition to St Patrick
"Direct Abortion is an unmitigated evil," speaker David Manley said frankly. David spoke of Ireland's tradition going back to St Patrick, and the crowds listened, cheering from time to time. 

Perinatal Hospice Care
Jennifer Kehoe explained Perinatal Hospice Care, and many in the crowd broke down in tears as the Warner family courageously shared their story (see link below).
As the crowds cheered, waved ProLife placards and sent up balloons, Vox Populi rallied around to shake the hands of Prolife representatives. Crowds stood around Senator Ronan Mullen from Co Galway, who has pledged in writing "I will uphold the life and dignity of every human being." The Senator spoke with dignity and charm to all who came to meet him, explaining his need for assistance in his campaign in the Midlands-North-West Constituency. Pamphlets were made available requesting assistance to help him in his campaign in the Midlands-North-West Constituency.

Protecting the Innocent Unborn
The Pro Life Campaign spoke of the brave men and women of the Oireachtas who voted against abortion, and whom the crowds cheered and revere as the new icons of Ireland - those who protect the Innocent Unborn.  The word among Vox Populi was that Deputy Terence Flanagan was among the crowd, as well as other members of the Oireachtas, and the crowds cheered and looked about to shake their hands. The luminous Fidelma Ealy-Heames was also spoken of, and the cheering continued.
Cora Sherlock spoke with inspiration that there is no need for an abortion law in Ireland. Ms Sherlock also paid tribute to Tom O'Gorman RIP who did such dedicated work for Prolife in Ireland. 

Hope for Healing
Lynn Coles of Womenhurt spoke of the devastation that the termination procedure causes in the lives of women. Lynn is a Certified Leader in the Life Impact Network Abortion Recovery Study 'Surrendering the Secret'. For those who live with the pain of a past abortion, there is tremendous hope for healing. Right to Life of the Unborn Child
At the end of the day, all streamed home. The right to life of the Unborn Child is enshrined in the hearts of all who came to the Vigil today, and the numbers that came today are - as one of the speakers so aptly said - only the tip of the iceberg.
