CHRISTIAN HEALING WORKBOOK ONE; HEALING MINISTRY OF THE LOGOS

God made visible

At the centre of Christian understanding of healing stands the mystery of the Logos, the eternal Word of God. St John tells us; “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). This declaration reveals that the Divine Word, the Logos, existed with God from all eternity. The Word shares fully in the Divine Nature. In the fullness of time, this eternal Word was sent into the world. The Logs came not merely as messenger, but as God Himself made visible among humankind in the person of Jesus Christ.

Word of God

In becoming man, the Word of God entered directly into the human condition. The eternal Logos did not remain distant from human suffering, but chose to dwell among those marked with affliction. Christ dwelt among humankind who were suffering from weakness, illness, sorrow and spiritual confusion. The Incarnation represents the ultimate expression of Divine solidarity with humankind. God came among us, sharing our life, so that He might restore what had been wounded and heal what had been broken.

The gospels portray Christ’s ministry as deeply rooted in compassion for the suffering world. The gospel tells us; “When He saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion to the depths of His being, for they were bewildered and dejected, like sheep who have no shepherd” (Matthew 9:36).

The Greek term used in this passage, splagchnistheis, expresses a powerful and profound form of compassion. It signifies a response that arises from the deepest interior of the person. It encompasses a movement of the heart so intense, that the whole being is stirred towards merciful action. In the case of Christ, this compassion was not merely emotional sympathy. It was a Divine impulse toward healing, restoration, and redemption.

Christ’s compassion

Throughout the Gospel narratives, this compassion repeatedly becomes the source of Christ’s healing works. When He encountered the sick, His heart was stirred to restore them. Christ was moved with compassion for the sick and healed them (Matthew 14:14). When the blind approached Jesus with faith, He was filled with mercy and restored their sight (Matthew 20:34). The gospels also recount Christ’s compassion for those tormented by spiritual oppression, such as the afflicted child (Mark 9:22). In each case, healing flowed from the compassionate Heart of the Logos made flesh.

Christ’s compassion was equally stirred by the sorrow of human loss. The moving account of the widow of Nain reveals the tenderness of the Heart of Jesus. When the Master encountered the grieving mother accompanying the body of her only son to burial, He was deeply moved with compassion (Luke 7:13). In that moment of sorrow, the power of Divine life confronted the reality of death itself, revealing that Christ’s mission includes restoration of life and hope.

The compassion of the Logos also extended to material needs of humankind. The sight of weary and hungry crowds stirred Christ’s mercy and called forth miraculous provision. On several occasions He fed multitudes who had followed Him into remote places. Jesus thus demonstrated that Divine compassion embraces the whole human person, including our physical needs and daily sustenance.

Loneliness and social exclusion

Loneliness and social exclusion likewise awakened Christ’s healing mercy. The gospel account of the leper offers a striking example. Lepers in ancient society lived in isolation, cut off from family and community. Yet when the man afflicted by leprosy approached Jesus, the evangelist records that Christ was moved with compassion and stretched out His Hand to heal him (Mark 1:41). The healing touch of Christ restored not only the man’s body, but also his place within the human community.

Beyond physical suffering, Christ was deeply moved by spiritual confusion and longing of people. Many were searching for God, yet failed to find the guidance they sought. The crowds appeared to Jesus as sheep without a shepherd - bewildered, spiritually hungry, and longing for Divine comfort. Christ’s ministry therefore addressed not only illness and distress, but also humankind’s profound spiritual need for guidance, truth, and reconciliation with God.

Christ’s healing ministry thus flows directly from His Logos identity. The eternal Word Who created the world, entered the world in order to restore it. The compassion of Jesus is visible expression of the Heart of God. Wherever Christ encounters suffering, His response is not indifference but mercy; not judgment, but restoration.

Logos mission

For those engaged in vocation of spiritual healing, this truth carries deep significance. Healing is not merely a human endeavour; it embraces participation in the mission of the Logos. When a member of the healing profession acts with faith, humility, and love, the healer becomes an instrument through which the compassion of Christ may continue to touch the wounded world.

The work of the Logos continues through every act of healing prayer, every moment of compassionate presence, and every effort to relieve suffering.  The Word Who once walked among humankind moves with compassion for the afflicted, restores the broken, and continues to call healers to share in His ministry of healing and mercy.

CHRISTIAN HEALING WORKBOOK ONE; GOD THE HEALER

God the Healer

From earliest pages of Sacred Scripture, God reveals Himself not only as Creator and Judge, but also as compassionate Healer of His people. Across generations, those who turned to Him in faith discovered that the Lord hears the cries of the afflicted and responds with mercy. Healing, therefore, is not a late development in the history of faith; it is woven deeply into humankind’s relationship with God from ancient times.

Abraham and intercessory prayer

One of the earliest examples of Divine healing appears in the life of Abraham. When Abraham prayed on behalf of Abimelech and his household, God responded to that prayer with restoration and healing. As recorded in the Book of Genesis, God healed Abimelech, his wife, and the members of his household (Genesis 20:17). This passage illustrates a profound spiritual principle: intercessory prayer of the faithful may become an instrument through which God’s healing grace flows to others.

The sacred writings repeatedly affirm that healing belongs to the Nature of God’s loving care. The psalmist declares in the Book of Psalms, “He sent out His word and healed them; He rescued them from the grave” (Psalm 107:20). These words emphasize that Divine healing proceeds from God’s living Word, which carries within it powers of restoration and deliverance. God’s healing is therefore not merely physical relief, but also rescue from deeper forms of suffering and despair.

The healing of King Hezekiah

Another moving testimony is found in the life of Hezekiah, King of Judah. When King Hezekiah was overwhelmed by illness and pleaded with God in tears, the Lord responded with compassion. Through the prophet Isaiah, God declared: “I have heard your prayer and seen your tears: I will heal you” (2 Kings 20:5). This passage beautifully reveals God’s tenderness. The Almighty is attentive not only to words of prayer, but also to the silent language of human sorrow.

Prophet Jeremiah and hope’s message

Prophetic tradition continues to affirm the healing dimension of God’s Character. Through the prophet Jeremiah, the Lord proclaimed hope to a wounded people: “But I will restore your health and heal your wounds, declares the Lord” (Jeremiah 30:17). Even when people felt abandoned and forgotten, God promised restoration. Divine Providence reminded humankind that Divine compassion remains present, even in times of deep spiritual exile.

Prophet Hosea about Healer God

Similarly, the prophet Hosea conveys the gentle Fatherly love of God. The Lord reflects upon His care for His people with tender words: “It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them in My arms, but they never realized that it was I who healed them” (Hosea 11:3). Here healing is presented not only as a miraculous intervention, but as the quiet, sustaining Presence of God guiding His people through life’s journey.

These testimonies from Scripture reveal a consistent truth: God has been Healer of His people from time immemorial. Healing flows from God’s compassion and covenantal love, as well as His desire for the flourishing of creation. Throughout history, individuals and nations have turned to God in their suffering, discovering that the Divine Heart is moved by mercy.

Jesus Christ, Son of God

In the fullness of time, God’s healing Presence was revealed even more clearly, when He sent His Word to dwell among humankind in the Person of Jesus Christ. Through Jesus, the healing Compassion of God became visible and tangible. Sick were restored, broken-hearted were comforted and oppressed were set free. The healing works of Christ stand as living continuation and fulfilment of the Divine promise that God is - and always has been - Healer of His people.

Healing vocation

For those who minister in the healing vocation, these scriptural foundations offer assurance and guidance. The healer does not act alone, but stands within a long tradition of faith in which God Himself remains the Source of restoration. Every act of healing, prayer, and compassionate intervention, reflects the healing Mission of Christ. Every effort to relieve suffering participates in the enduring truth proclaimed throughout Scripture - that the Lord is our Healer; yesterday, today and forever.

CHRISTIAN HEALING WORKBOOK ONE; MISSION OF HEALING

Salvific mission of Jesus Christ

Healing, deliverance, and miracles stand at the very heart of the salvific mission of Jesus Christ. The Gospels repeatedly show that the coming of the Saviour was not only a proclamation of truth, but also a powerful restoration of the human person. Wherever Christ went, suffering was met with compassion, and illness encountered Divine mercy. Those oppressed by malevolent forces, were restored to freedom. The Saviour’s ministry revealed that God’s saving work embraces the whole person; body, mind, and soul.

Sun of righteousness

The coming of the Redeemer had long been foretold by the prophets. In the Book of Malachi we read the beautiful promise: “But unto you that fear My Name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in His wings,” (Malachi 4:2). This prophetic image expresses both hope and restoration. The Messiah would not merely teach; He would bring healing light into a world overshadowed by suffering. In Christ, the Divine compassion of God would shine forth upon humankind like the rising sun, dispelling the shadows of affliction.

History of humankind

To understand the ministry of healing, one must also recall our deeper spiritual history. In the earliest days of creation, humankind enjoyed a close and harmonious relationship with God. Yet through the ancestral fall, associated with the events described in the book of Genesis, that communion was fractured. Humankind was driven from Eden, and the consequences of this rupture began to mark the human condition. Sin entered the world, and with it came suffering, disease, ageing, and death.

Separated from the fullness of Divine grace, humankind gradually lost the harmony for which we had been created. Pages of history reveal tragic effects of this brokenness. Violence, hatred, theft and falsehood began to afflict human relationships. Innocent lives were wounded by injustice. The dignity of the human person was frequently obscured by destructive forces of sin. Our spiritual reality was affected, for humankind became vulnerable to the influence of evil. Human beings became susceptible to oppression by fallen angelic powers hostile to God’s goodness.

Compassion of God

Yet the story of humankind is not one of abandonment. Divine mercy remained steadfast. God, seeing the suffering of His creation, was moved with profound compassion. In His Providence, He promised redemption and restoration. The sending of His Son to earth, was the fulfilment of this promise. The advent of the Messiah was a Divine intervention intended to restore what had been lost, to heal what had been wounded.

The mission of Christ was not limited to instruction or moral guidance alone. The Father’s intent was that the Messiah undertake a mission of restoration. Jesus healed the sick, delivered the possessed, and comforted the broken-hearted. Each miracle was a sign pointing toward the greater work of salvation; a renewal of the human person and reconciliation between God and humankind.

The healer participates in Christ’s loving mission

For those called to the ministry of healing, this sacred history provides both context and inspiration. In a humble way, the healer participates in the ongoing work of Divine compassion. By means of prayer, faith and service, the healer becomes an instrument through which God’s restorative grace may touch the suffering world. Healing, therefore, is not merely a human activity. It is a participation in the loving mission that began with Christ and continues wherever hearts respond to the call of mercy.

In this light, the work of healing must always be approached with faith, humility and reverence. The healer serves as a willing vessel through which God’s healing Presence may be made manifest. Through such service, the promise spoken by the prophet continues to unfold: the Sun of righteousness still rises, and His wings still carry healing for those who seek Him.

CHRISTIAN HEALING - WORKBOOK ONE: REFLECTIONS ON HEALING. FOREWORD

CHRISTIAN HEALING

WORKBOOK ONE

Reflections on healing

Foreword

The ministry of healing has always occupied a sacred place within the life of faith and service of humankind. Throughout history, those called to the vocation of healing have sought not only to relieve physical suffering, but also to restore hope, dignity, and spiritual strength to those entrusted to their care. This work has been prepared as a resource for those who serve in this noble calling.

The healer stands at the meeting point between human suffering and Divine compassion. In responding to the needs of others, the healer participates in a mission that finds its deepest meaning in the Life and ministry of Jesus Christ. The Gospels testify that Christ came to bring salvation to humankind. The Saviour confronted the consequences of the Fall - sin, suffering, ageing, and death - with the power of Divine mercy and restoration.

Jesus went about Galilee, teaching in the synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people (Matthew 4:23-24). Miracles, healings, and raising of the dead stand as profound signs of Christ’s ministry. These signs and wonders reveal the compassionate Heart of God and the promise of renewed and eternal life.

The call to healing did not end with Christ’s earthly ministry. Across nations and generations, healers have been summoned to share in this salvific work. Healers serve as instruments of Divine grace in a wounded world. Whether through prayer, compassionate presence, or the ministry of spiritual restoration, the healer participates in a sacred vocation that demands humility, wisdom, and deep faith.

May this work serve as both guide and encouragement in this holy work.
