Cercle Allocation Allocation Services

VISIONS FROM THE MONASTERY: ART BOOK- FOREWORD

ART BOOK

VISIONS FROM THE MONASTERY

Dedicated in memory of the Congo martyrs

Foreword

Art as living expression of faith

Throughout the ages, artists have offered their finest talents and patient labour in service of faith. Their sacred art was created to invite contemplation, and to lead the viewer beyond the image towards eternal truths.

In medieval times, churches became places where scripture could almost be seen unfolding before the eyes. Frescoes, altarpieces and sacred images brought bible stories into the lives of people. Church walls became, in a sense, illuminated pages of sacred history. Biblical scenes were presented through the hands of artists who sought to express reverence for God.

Among those who profoundly contributed to spiritual and artistic culture of the medieval Church were the Franciscans. Inspired by the spirituality of Saint Francis of Assisi, the mendicant friars often commissioned art that reflected their values of compassion and reverence for creation.

This book seeks to stand within that long tradition of faith expressed through art. May hues and images of spirituality become banners of faith within our hearts, drawing us from the visible towards the eternal.
