AFRICA: KENYA BANS MARIE STOPES INTERNATIONAL FROM OFFERING ABORTION SERVICES; ALLEGED NEWS



AFRICA: MARIE STOPES INTERNATIONAL HAS BEEN BANNED FROM OFFERING ABORTION SERVICES IN KENYA, AND HAS BEEN REPRIMANDED FOR BREAKING THE REPUBLIC'S LAWS; ALLEGED NEWS. [1] The declaration came from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB), after a public outcry over the fact that Marie Stopes Kenya's advertisements promoted abortion, which is largely illegal in the country; Alleged News. Inquiry
A Special Preliminary Inquiry Committee was convened by the KMPDB after attention was drawn to the fact that Marie Stopes had adverts running on various radio stations, despite a ban on all abortion advertising by the Kenya Film Classification Boards, Alleged News. [1]

Petition
The complainant in the case is Ms Ann Kioko of CitizenGo Africa, which ran a petition calling on the Health Secretary to investigate the adverts and ban Marie Stopes from operating in Kenya: Alleged News. [1] Evidence of adverts promoting abortion on radio, newspapers and social media was given, and Ms Kioko said she had personally called Marie Stopes' switchboard and been told she could have an abortion for 5 000 Kenyan shillings; Alleged News. Marie Stopes
A woman testified she was given an abortion at a Marie Stopes clinic in Nairobi 22 years ago, and said that the abortion had led to "profound psychological and spiritual effects" that she battled with for years; Alleged News. [1]
An obstetrician reminded the committee that the constitution of Kenya recognizes the right to life, and that life begins at conception. 
Dr Ngare also said that the World Health Organisation gives no definition of "safe abortion " that Marie Stopes claims to provide, not least because abortion is never safe for the unborn child and the women who suffer psychological truama; Alleged News. [1]

Chairman of Marie Stopes Kenya
The Chairman of Marie Stopes Kenya admitted running adverts promoting "safe abortion" and said they did not halt them as they had not received the letter from the Kenya Film Classification Board instructing them to do so; Alleged News. [1]
This statement was contradicted by a Kenya Film Classification Board representative, who affirmed the Country Director of Marie Stopes Kenya had acknowledged receipt of their letter: Alleged News. [1]

Marie Stopes to cease and desist
The KMPDM ruled that Marie Stopes had breached advertising rules in and was in violation of the prohibition against propagating "deceitful, erroneous or misleading information"; Alleged News. They also noted with concern that the advertising campaign had as target youths between 14 and 25 years old: Alleged News. [1]
The Board ordered that Marie Stopes Kenya immediately cease and desist offering any form of abortion services in all its facilities within the Republic of Kenya, Alleged News. [1]

Culture of Life Africa
In 2017, Lumiere Charity wrote of the Culture of Life Africa's video focusing on Marie Stopes International's Operations in Africa; Alleged News. [2]
The video 'Killing Africa' presented by Ms Obianuju Ekeocha included an interview with a former worker of a Marie Stopes International [MSI] abortion clinic in Uganda, who claimed that illegal abortions were carried out by medical assistants [not doctors] and that foetal remains were flushed down the toilet; Alleged News. The video highlighted how the funding given to Marie Stopes international was being spent, Alleged News. [2]
According to Culture of Life Africa, MSI performed 3.3 million abortions and abortion related services every year, Alleged News. [2]

MSI queried by Care Quality Commissions
In the UK, Marie Stopes Internationl was queried by the Care Quality Commissions after inspectors found a catalogue of practices in English clinics, Alleged News. [2]
The 2,600 safety flaws at Marie Stopes abortion clinics included the following in the Care Quality Commission report, Alleged News. [2]
- Doctors were going home for the day leaving sedated women in the hands of nurses and healthcare assistants; almost half of nurses had not been trained to do resuscitation, Alleged News [2]
- Some vulnerable women did not understand the full consequences of what they were about to do, Alleged News [2]

Woman died after abortion at Marie Stopes Clinic UK
An Irish woman bled to death after getting into a taxi after following a late-stage abortion at a Marie Stopes clinic in Ealing, west London, Alleged News. [3]
