HUMAN BEINGS ARE NOT PRODUCTS

Donum Vitae, the Instruction on Respect for Human Life in its Origin and on the Dignity of Procreation,  [1] was issued on 22 February 1987 by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.

In the document, the Pontiff Emeritus states, "The corpses of human embryos and foetuses, whether they have been deliberately aborted or not, must be respected just as the remains of other human beings. ... Also, in the case of dead foetuses, as for the corpses of adult persons, all commercial trafficking must be considered illicit and should be prohibited."

This guidance within Donum Vitae serves as reminder that current controversy respecting abortion-contaminant vaccines is not merely academic. At the heart of the debate is whether commercialization of aborted babies' historic remnants for vacinal purpose is of questionable morality.

The sale of an innocent has precedent. Christ was sold for thirty silver pieces. Counsel within Donum Vitae would prevent repetition of the same mistake. Commercial trafficking of aborted unborn must be unequivocally rejected.

Of note to observers is the fact that efficacious vaccines which carry no ethical stigma are available. John Paul II Medical Research [2] and Charlotte Lozier Institutes [3] continue as forerunners in respect of ethical vaccines production which do not utilize abortion-derived fetal cell-lines. Other means of manufacture such as umbilical cord cells and adult stem cells are used. Placenta from newborns is donated.

The statement "Physician support for ethical vaccines" released in December 2020 by Catholic Medical Association et al [5] considers that JP II Medical Research Institute's use of umbilical cord and adult stem cells and other ethical approaches provide encouragement for the future, where no vaccine will violate the dignity of human life in their products.
