SOUTH AFRICA: CANNED HUNTING 'CANNED'; ALLEGED NEWS

SOUTH AFRICA: THOSE WHO LOVE ANIMALS WELCOMED THE CABINET'S ENDORSEMENT OF A REPORT CALLING FOR THE END OF LION FARMING, CAPTIVE LION HUNTING, CUB-PETTING AND COMMERICAL FARMING OF RHINOS; ALLEGED NEWS. [1]

Heartbreaking stories have been recounted around kitchen tables in South Africa. One such hearsay was of a little lion cub, an orphan, who was hand-reared as a pet in a household. The little one loved the human family, and learned to trust humans. Thus, when the reared lion was put out for canned hunting, he stood still when faced at close quarters with a gun. He just stood and watched with trusting eyes as the person who had paid to kill him fired a bullet from close quarters. The lion died where he stood, still docile. Apparently he must have thought it was supper-time (he had been taught to come to this area at meal-times). He would not have known that the person who came to kill him was not a friend who had come to bring his food.

Canned hunting

Canned hunting is the rearing of animals in order to kill them. It is said that some of the lions are drugged before being shot. [2]

Call for protection of iconic wild animals

The Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries has called for the protection of iconic wild animals to be prioritized over the cruelty of commercial exploitation; Alleged News. [1] This action is in the spirit of wildlife conservation.

Minister Barbara Creecy

The 580-page High-Level Panel (HLP) report is the result of nearly two years of discussion and research by a panel of specialists assembled by Minister Barbara Creecy, with more than 70 written submissions from individuals and organizations; Alleged News. [1]

The Minister accepted a panel majority finding that the treatment of, particularly, lions and rhinos was unacceptable and detrimental to the image of South Africa as a prime tourist destination; Alleged News. [1] The report now awaits endorsement by Parliament; Alleged News. [1]

Opposition to trophy hunting continues

NGO opposition to trophy hunting continues. Questions are expected to be asked about the report's endorsement of what it calls "responsible and authentic hunting" and the leveraging of hunting leopards; Alleged News. [1]

The appointment of the panel was triggered by a Colloquium on Captive Lion Breeding in 2018 by the Portfolio Committee on Environmental Affairs in which a range of national and international organizations gave evidence; Alleged News. [1]

Damage to South Africa's conservation

According to that report, which was later adopted by Parliament in a resolution calling for the introduction of legislation to end captive lion breeding, there was a predominant view that the captive lion breeding industry did not contribute to conservation and was doing damage to South Africa’s conservation and tourism reputation; Alleged News.
