DEPO PROVERA IS LINKED TO MENINGIOMA BRAIN TUMOURS IN NEW STUDY, AS WOMEN SUE PFIZER OVER HEALTH RISKS; ALLEGED NEWS

Depo-Provera

Depo-Provera is a prescription birth control injection containing a progestin hormone called medroxyprogesterone acetate; the FDS approved the drug for pregnancy prevention, in 1992; Alleged News. Meningioma and loss of bone density warnings

In September 2024, the European Medicines Agency issued a direct communication warning healthcare providers about Depo-Provera's link to meningiomas; Alleged News. [2]  Canada's Depo label had also already included warnings that meningiomas have been reported with long-term use; Alleged News. [2]

In December 2025, the FDA added a meningioma (brain tumour) warning to Depo-Provera's label; Alleged News. [2] The label change followed a 2024 study published in the BMJ; Alleged News. [2] Depo-Provera is a synthetic progesterone, and scientists have linked progesterone to the development of intracranial and cerebral meningiomas (brain tumours); Alleged News. [2] 

Clinical Pharmacist Dazhi Liu told Drugwatch, "Meningioma is the most common type of primary brain tumour, accounting for approximately 30% of all brain tumours. These tumours originate in the meninges, which are the outer three layers of tissue between the skull and the brain that cover and protect the brain just under the skull," Alleged News. [2]

Roland et.al
A March 2024 French study published in BMJ found that Depo-Provera may be linked to a higher risk of developing a meningioma; Alleged News. [2] According to researchers, Depo-Provera users had a 5.6-fold increase in the risk of developing a meningioma after long-term use for more than a year; Alleged News. [2] Roland et al. Griffin, Russell L 
An American study published in Cancers in September 2024, confirmed the meningioma risk found in the BMJ study; Alleged News. [2] Researchers found that Depo-Provera use was associated with a 53% increase in odds of developing a meningioma, and the risk went up with duration of use; Alleged News. [2] 

Griffin states in the conclusions section that "The current study reports an increased association between dMPA and meningioma, with the association being limited to cerebral meningioma." [4]

Cape Town South Africa
Ms Shene Gurling of Cape Town, had been taking the injection for 22 years, and was diagnosed with the tumour, which allegedly developed after prolonged use of Depo-Provera; Alleged News. [7] Ms Gurling had been on the injection since she was 17; at the end of 2023, Ms Gurling started having memory loss, and the vision in her left eye became impaired; Alleged News. [7] An MRI confirmed a brain tumour, which was affecting her optic nerve; Alleged News. [7] Ms Gurling underwent surgery, was dismissed by her employer for incapacity, and suffers from seizures, for which she is reliant on epilepsy medication; Alleged News. [7] 

Gauteng South Africa
Ms Lynn van Rensburg of Gauteng, started using Depo-Provera 30 years before the time of the newspaper report; Alleged News. [7] At the end of 2023, Ms van Rensburg noticed increasing tearing of her eye, and she developed a stye, and sought medical advice; Alleged News. [7] Her eye was protruding, and a neurologist discovered a tumour behind her eye; Alleged News. [7]

Ms van Rensburg went into theatre for a nine-hour procedure, surgeons managed to remove 80% of the meningioma, which was entwined in her eye socket bone and skull, on the side of her brain; Alleged News. [7] Ms van Rensburg underwent severe depression and had to deal with the emotional trauma of her ordeal; Alleged News. [7] 

In 2025, her eye started tearing and protruding again; Alleged News. [7] Ms van Rensburg said she never considered that her contraceptive could have been the cause of her tumour until she saw an article on a US website about the study, linking Depo-Provera to meningioma; Alleged News. [7] "I felt sick after reading it. I was on that injection for three decades. What made it worse for me is that so few women know about this. Across the country, people are getting the injection at government clinics, just like I used to. But do they know about the danger?" Alleged News. [7]

Vereeniging South Africa
Ms Belinda Potgieter of Vereeniging used Depo-Provera for 22 years, was left partially paralysed after the removal of her meningioma; and had to re-learn how to walk; Alleged News. [7] Her symptoms began with debilitating headaches, of which Ms Potgieter said, "I didn't expect seven tumours on my brain to be the cause," Alleged News. [7] 

Ms Potgieter underwent surgery in 2024 to remove one tumour, which, if left untreated, would have left her paralysed; Alleged News. [7] Afterwards, she had to learn how to use her hands and walk again after the right side of her body was affected; Alleged News. [7]  Ms Pogieter said, "If I had known the side effects ... I would never, never have taken it," Alleged News. [7]

Gqeberha South Africa
Ms Tanya Dippenaar of Gqeberha has nerve damage to her face, damaged brain cells, and the inability to experience taste on the left side of her mouth; Alleged News. [7] She had been living with a growth stretching from her frontal sinuses to the back of her ear, and into her temporal lobe for years, as it is too big for doctors to consider operating; Alleged News. [7] Ms Dippenaar had been on Depo-Provera from 2003 until 2014; Alleged News. [7] In 2017, she developed an ear infection, and for nearly five years, attended ENT doctors and specialists; Alleged News. [7] Ms Dippenaar also felt pressure in her left eye; Alleged News. [7]

In 2021, a CT scan revealed an extensive meningioma, Ms Dippenaar was told it cannot be removed as the risk of surgery outweighs any benefits, one risk being the possibility of facial paralysis; Alleged News. [7] She underwent 30 radiation sessions in efforts to reduce the tumour's size; the treatment caused memory loss, fatigue and severe head pain; Alleged News. [7]

Scotland
Women left with meningioma brain tumours after prolonged use of Depo-Provera have called on the Scottish government to better regulate the contraceptive injection; Alleged News. Depo-Provera tragic death
Ms Anita Peterson was only 47 years old when she died suddenly in October 2024; Alleged News. [9] An autopsy revealed that the cause of death was that Ms Peterson had been suffering from an intracranial meningioma - more commonly known as a brain tumour; Alleged News.
