EXERCISE
1. In your opinion, should an employer discuss staff with others? If not, why not?
In my opinion, an employer should never discuss staff with others. I believe that doing so can prove hurtful and devisive.
2. Would you think that Miss Mark was an easy person to work with? If so, or if not, why?
I think Miss Mark was not an easy person to work with. She did not have obvious charm, did not often laugh, and seems to have been a disciplinarian.
3. What do the words "damn the shibboleth" mean?
In the context of the comprehension, it means 'disregard the old-fashioned prejudice against women'.
4. Why did so many women of Miss Mark's generation remain unmarried and childless?
Many women of Miss Mark's generation remained unmarried and childless because the men they would have married had died in the war.
5. Did the writer's sister agree with her employer's opinion of Miss Mark? If you don't think so, mention a word describing her reaction to his comment and her further action.
I don't think the writer's sister agreed with her employer's opinion of Miss Mark, because she was shocked when she heard his comment. She then brought the present from the staff at work all the way to the neighbouring town to give to Miss Mark, a kind action.
6. Why did Miss Mark not say goodbye to the staff?
I believe Miss Mark did not say goodbye to the staff because she had been deeply hurt by the employer's comment, and had felt humiliated that her loyal service of over thirty years had not been appreciated or valued.
7. Why did she not invite the colleague inside?
Miss Mark was a lonely lady who had been hurt at her place of employment, so she just wanted to move on with her life and did not want any reminders of what she had just been through.
